It’s ‪#‎IndieBooksBeSeen‬ day! So, as my friends and family have already heard (ad nauseum?), I’m working on a new novel, called Alliance. Considering the nature of the day and all, I thought I’d let y’all see just a little of the front cover, and give you a taste of what the book is about.

Although there are a whole lot of zombie apocalypse books out there, very few have hit on the subject of what vampires will do — since they’d be in competition with the zombies for the food supply. In Alliance, a well-hidden but well financed global community of vampires (“Upirim” in the book, after one of the oldest words around for vampire) decide they are going to ally with the remaining humans. The problem is that not all humans trust the Upirim intentions (big surprise there), not to mention that not all the Upirim feel the need to ally, and instead want to simply pen the remaining humans and use them as feed stock.

The story is told from the perspective of Averney Tangel, an Upirim born in 1793, adopted by the current head of the Upirim world community. Expect political intrigue, action, and some commentary on the nature of the human condition from the perspective of those who live hundreds and even thousands of years longer than we do.

I expect to publish on October 31. For reasons. Here’s a slice of the cover. Dig in.

As I get closer to a finished working draft for my novel Alliance, I find myself thinking once again about the reach of Richard Matheson’s I Am Legend. If you enjoy vampire stories less than half a century old, you should thank Richard Matheson. But here’s the interesting bit. If you enjoy zombie stories, you should also thank Richard Matheson. George A. Romero credits I Am Legend for inspiring Night of the Living Dead, and any horror fan knows the impact that film had on all things zombie.

While re-reading the book for an apocalyptic literature course in university a couple of years ago, I was reminded of the link Matheson had created between vampire and zombie, and started to think. A few months later, I had an outline. As of now, I’m working on the first draft. Alliance is the story of what happens to vampires when the zombie plague hits humankind. More details as I write them.
